Roger Von Gunten: Eden

////////////////////////////////////////////

The transition from modernism to postmodernism in Mexico is represented by a group of artists called “La Ruptura” (“The rupture”), among these artists is Roger von Gunten.

In the work of this extraordinary artist it Is clearly appreciated how, through a powerful drawing and a singular chromatism, he abandons what we know as pure abstraction, to find in abstract expressionism, informalism and neo-figuration, more formal means suitable to recreate his pictorial imagination, which, by its first impulse approaches and its theme, is at times near to what we know as comics.

This pictorial gesture, evident in each of his works, is a reflection of an internal dialogue between his environment and his representational need for a world filtered by his particular and forceful humor, which expresses the tensions and conflicts of the world, as well as a frank vision of his own environment, with a sense of urgency and immediacy, freshness and first intention, which has earned him a position in the figurative painting of contemporary Mexico.

The selection of pieces that integrate the sample Eden is made up by drawings and paintings; a visual journey through the production of this creator, who for more than five decades has consolidated a creative language that makes it widely identifiable as a proposal.

His work found a context corresponding to his own discourse, in an experiential reality that consolidates the artist and the man, the imaginary with his own life: Tepoztlán, a place where his studio is surrounded by abundant green, present in his work as a hymn to existence, as the real reflection of their own aspirations; a spiritual liberation from its iconographic world, based on the union of the being with the fauna and the vegetation, which translates into a fantastic representation of this harmonic coexistence, that allows to shape a magical-figurative world.

Notwithstanding the above, in his work the strength of the denunciation resembles the one who clings to the defense of that balanced environment, by the discharge of intense colors and the strong stroke of the lines from which biomorphic or zoomorphic forms arise, which suggest the presence of figures that, rather than copying or reproducing them from existing ones with a realistic desire, creates or develops them as a semi-figurative or semi-abstract representation.

Each piece is in itself a paradox of postmodern knowledge, where the image supplies the content and the viewer resorts to the memory to facilitate the plastic reconstruction of that image. We could say that the work of Roger von Gunten is the recreation of a fiction, through another fiction, whose original narrative is re conceptualized by the new reading of the beholder.
