Modern Art Transaction between Turkey and Germany

Reciprocal reflexions, nostalgia and prejudices have left mark on the cultural transactions
between Turkey and Germany. Both sides bear imaginary worlds that play a great role on
the construction of the intellectual basis of both cultural and social trading. 18 artists invited
to the "Fiktion Okzidental" exhibition which will meet the audience in Ankara and Berlin
after İstanbul, just reflect these imaginary worlds and their effects on reality to their work.

The exhibition has been organized on account of the 50th anniversary of Turkish labor
migration to Germany that permanently altered the relations between Turkey and Germany
creating a brand new social and political basis for the relations. The content of the exhibition
depend on the area of these two culture policies the first of which is defined by an efficient
Turkish-German art improvement treating and articulating migration to Germany and
social conversion while the other area focuses on the perception of the "West" in Turkey,
globalization and the cultural and social changes as a consequence of migration.

"Fiktion Okzident" will be exhibited in Tophane-i Amire in İstanbul and CerModern in Ankara
in association with Turkish Ministry of Culture and the Goethe Institute. The institutions
doing the organization enter in to the susceptible zone of these imaginary worlds and do
some rapprochement experiments over chosen samples.

In the exhibition "Fiktion Okzident" of which curators are Johannes Odenthal, Çetin
Güzelhan and Emre Zeytinoğlu, sensation of Turkish origin German artists or Turkish artists
living in Germany besides critical examination of the West in Turkey stand out.
